Born and raised in Victoria and with an extensive background in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Gymnastics, Partner and Flight harness work, Artistic Director, Kim Breiland, opened STAGES Performing Arts School in 1980.

She has continued each year to teach all ages and abilities, the love of dance. Kim has performed extensively throughout Canada, the United States, the Middle East and Germany having worked along side with the likes of Karen Kain, Evelyn Hart, Rex Harrington, Laura Alonso, Janet Jackson, Dick Clark, Entertainment Tonight, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Stephanie Mills, the David Foster Foundation, Cirque Du Soleil, members of Tap Dogs, Long John Baldry, Weird Al Yankovich, Leslie Neilson and Olympia Dukakis and was delighted to perform for the Prince and Princess of Wales. Kim has toured extensively with the overseas production of CATS and performed in the award winning THE FLIGHT OF THE DRAGON.

She found herself back in front of the camera as a singer dancer in the CTV Television series Aliens in America and ONCE UPON A TIME. She has appeared in numerous videos, TV commercials and specials and has orchestrated four international tours, performing in the former Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China, as well as entertaining Canadian Armed Forces during two international tours.

In recognition of her work, Kim has received personal congratulations from both Canada’s Prime Minister and the Premier of BC.  She has been the recipient of the Award of Excellence from King Entertainment in Toronto, Arts Leader of the Year. Her Company received an M award for the Arts and she was also nominated for Woman of Distinction. Most recently Kim has appeared in the TV series Once Upon A Time and just finished working on The Seventh Son with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. She has created a number of flash mobs for sporting events, The Intercultural Association’s 40th Anniversary and Canada Day 2012 in front of the Parliament Buildings. She has choreographed over 30 musicals and plays for St. Michael’s University including large scale productions such as Evita, Les Miserable, Jesus Christ Super Star, West Side Story and Cabaret.

What Kim is most proud of are her students. Not only the ones that she has the pleasure of teaching on a daily basis but those who have gone off to work in the industry including Canada’s Got Talent, Hell Cats, Mirror Mirror, Miss Universe 07/08 Miss Riyo Mari.

  • and working in the West End in London and on several productions in Las Vegas.

Kim has found herself choreographing on a much larger scale for the opening ceremonies for FIFA’S World Cup Soccer. Her 2nd for this International Sports Organization.

Kim also choreographed Living Colours, 2010 Spirit Spectacular in Victoria and a segment of the Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations working with over 200 dancers, 100 Unity Drummers, Hip Hop artist Kira Kadiri, local musicians, the media and the final torch bearer to create a segment in front of the Parliament Buildings called GLOWING HEARTS.

Her skills as a choreographer were once again called upon in 2012 to choreograph for Connecting Hands From Around the World an international festival featuring many local politicians and dignitaries including the Ambassadors of Uruguay and Sweden, the BC’s Lt. Governor and BC’s Attorney General Wally Oppal. STAGES dancers have performed at the 150th Anniversary of Victoria Celebrations, Canada Day Flash Mob on the Legislature Lawn on July 1, 2012 and the Intercultural Association’s 40th Anniversary Celebration.

It is STAGES mandate to be involved within our community, performing regularly local elementary and middle schools, hospitals, senior centres, sporting events, children’s events and community festivals. STAGES recently performed at the annual Kids Fun Run For Jack held at Tillicum Mall, Victoria, volunteered at Bras On Broad cancer fundraiser, and for Santa’s Anonymous. Kim’s musical theatre background is extensive having choreographed over 50 productions for local theatre, Opera Companies and schools.

Kim produced CELEBRATION of Life! And DANCERS FOR LIFE AIDS benefits which was responsible for raising over $250,000 towards the various AIDS organization in the community. DANCERS FOR LIFE saw some of the premiere internationally recognized dance talent from across Canada and the United States converge on Victoria in support of the event.

Her love of children has allowed her to work and develop an extensive pre-school program that caters to students as young as 12 months and up. This program has exploded and been recognized in the city as one of the top pre-school programs. Because of this recognition she was asked to be a guest speaker at the 2010 Alberta Dance Society’s Annual General Meeting as well as the Hot Spot Dance Convention in Calgary, summer of 2012

Starting in 1980, Kim established a tradition of providing dancers of all ages and levels of experience with the very best training possible in a supportive and caring environment. Her goal was and continues to be to promote, in each and every student, self-confidence, self-esteem and a sense of fulfillment while fostering self-expression, a healthy body and confidence as well as nurturing inspiration, creativity and pride in their accomplishments.
